Fantastic plastic

'PLEDs' were discovered by scientists at Cambridge University in 1989. PLEDs are polymer light-emitting diodes, plastics that glow when you pass electricity through them. At Cambridge Display Technology they are developing screens that use this technology.

The layer of plastic, which is only a few nanometres thick, is sandwiched between two thin layers of metal. When electricity passes through the plastic it glows, giving an image on the screen.
