Created by scientists

In the lab, scientists have used ideas from nature to add some very clever chemistry to clothing. Using their knowledge of how particular chemical ingredients mix and react together, they can custom-design nano-sized molecules to suit their needs.

They've made molecules like sponges to soak up liquid, some like whiskers to fend off spills and others that jiggle around to release stains. Because the treatments are on the nano-scale, they can be attached to fabrics without changing the material's characteristic look and feel.
