Nearly 15 years ago, nanoscientist and futurologist Eric Drexler predicted that smart materials would surround us. In our homes, paint would change colour on command. Invisible solar cells would supply us with clean, green power. Video wallpaper would replace boxy televisions. Some of these ideas are already at the prototype stage.
