Banished bacteria
Scientists at the University of Florida have used fluorescent nanoparticles to spot food contamination, pinpointing just one E. coli bacterium in a sample of beef. They're developing their ultrasensitive test further and hope to improve food safety:
'Using a variety of colours, we can use fluorescent nanoparticles to check food for many different types of harmful bacteria, including E.coli and Salmonella. With a hand-held fluorescence detector, we'll be able to spot them all at the same time.' Weihong Tan, University of Florida
