Clever light bulbs

Today's light bulbs are not very different from those made 120 years ago - they still produce more heat than light. But a new generation of lighting devices that use light-emitting particles is being developed. The most popular are LEDs. Scientists are trying to modify LEDs with special nanocrystals known as quantum dots to give cheaper and clearer light.

Within 20 years, new developments could reduce the energy consumed by lighting by more than 29 per cent worldwide!
