When fossil fuels run out, we'll need an alternative. Sunshine and water offer an almost endless source of energy.
Today, alternative energy provides only a tiny proportion of our energy. It will take a lot of political will to shift the balance of research away from fossil-fuel technology. But scientists are already looking at how nanotechnology could help us turn alternative energy sources into a power to be reckoned with.
