Artificial nanobots
In 1986 a man called Eric Drexler wrote a book about 'assemblers' - little tiny robots that could cut up molecules and rearrange atoms to make brand-new stuff like food, machines, water or anything really. He thought that we could make artificial nanobots like this much more powerful than nature's nanobots.
