In 2004 Matthew Nagle had the BrainGate chip implanted in his brain. Although Matthew is severely paralysed, the implant allowed him to grasp and pick up objects with a mechanical arm just by thinking about moving his own hand.

The BrainGate implant contains 100 hair-thin electrodes, detecting signals directly from the motor cortex - the brain area that controls movement - and feeding them into a computer to control objects.
