American scientists are developing a wireless brain implant that could be used with an FES system. The implant is designed to pick up movement signals from the brain's motor cortex and use them to control the patient's muscles remotely.
Researcher Dawn Taylor says, 'The long-term goal of my research is to interface FES systems directly to the brain. This would allow paralysed individuals to move their limbs the same way everyone else does - just by thinking of doing so.'
