Magnetic mimicry

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) uses a magnetic pulse to affect the electrical activity of the brain, without causing pain. Experts are investigating whether it could treat depression, and the evidence seems encouraging.

Over 25 studies have compared real TMS to fake TMS in patients with depression, and there is clear evidence that real TMS leads to greater improvements. What's not clear is whether the effects are actually big enough to be used to treat depression.
