How smart are the robot cubes?

Antenna spoke to robot creator Hod Lipson about the world's first family of self replicating robots, and asked how smart they actually are:

'The robots are not very intelligent. They execute a fixed program and cannot adapt to any new situation, or handle any variation. In a former project, we worked on robots that can evolve their morphology and control - but they couldn't replicate. The robots we show here can self replicate but not adapt or evolve. In the future we would like to combine these traits in a single system, getting a little closer to biology.'
Hod Lipson, robot researcher, Cornell University
