A voyage into the unknown
Planktos's Pacific expedition is the first to carry out large-scale iron seeding. The plan is to test the technique's potential to lock away atmospheric carbon dioxide, CO2, and help slow global warming.
The company's research ship, Weatherbird II, set out from Washington, DC on 7 March 2007, with an 18-man crew including 10 scientists. After stopping at several ports along the way to pick up gear, they're hoping to reach their target site, 320 km off the Galapagos Islands, in late June. By July, their first phytoplankton bloom should be well under way.
