Mighty iron
Planktos scientists hope that adding extra iron into the ocean will boost phytoplankton growth and soak up significant amounts of CO2, helping to slow climate change.
'We're hoping to regenerate 80-115 million tonnes of plankton life to recharge the marine food chain. We want to try to capture 18-25 million tonnes of CO2 during our six pilot projects. If we could restore phytoplankton populations to what they were 20 years ago they could capture 3-5 billion tonnes of atmospheric CO2 a year,' says Russ.
