'There have been a number of iron fertilisation experiments carried out in the last ten years or so. The general feeling is that you'd need tanker loads of iron over a long period of time to make any difference to global carbon dioxide levels. I would treat Planktos's claims with a great deal of caution.
'Superficially this technology may look great, but the long-term impacts are completely unknown. I think there's a certain amount of techno-arrogance with projects like this. It's just not possible to predict exactly how ecosystems are going to behave. It's likely this scheme will cause some unanticipated and entirely unwanted effects.'
