Planktos has encountered international opposition to its iron seeding plan. Several countries, including the US, spoke out against such schemes at a scientific meeting in Spain last month. They said that commercial iron seeding has environmental risks and isn't backed up by enough scientific evidence.

Jim Thomas, of Canadian environmental organisation ETC Group, says: 'Governments are bluntly warning companies that there could be national and international regulatory repercussions from commercial iron dumping.'
