Siberia is bearing the brunt of climate warming. Long-term studies suggest the region's temperature has risen by over 2 ºC in the past 30 years. Now scientists think this meltdown could be just the beginning.
As Siberia's frozen ground thaws, slushy soil is slumping from lake shorelines into the waters below. This releases a carbon food source that's been locked in ice for thousands of years. Lake bacteria gobble up the feast, belching bubbles of methane in the process. But methane is a powerful greenhouse gas.
