Lab in the middle of nowhere

Tucked on the edge of the Arctic Circle, Siberia's enormous lake-dotted landscape covers an area the size of France and Germany combined. It's an inhospitable and remote place to work, but scientists say it's worth the trouble.

'It takes a lot of effort to get to our field station in Siberia. Sometimes we can get stranded for days travelling there, so why go all that way? Well it's because of the yedoma, the region's unique permafrost. Siberia's like a giant ice cube and it's starting to melt.' Katey Walter, climate scientist, University of Alaska Fairbanks
