Poking holes

The team of intrepid scientists made their home at the Northeast Science Station in Cherskii, a small town about 100 miles south of the Arctic Ocean. From the base, Katey and her team braved the Siberian elements daily to check their bubble traps. But it wasn't all hard work.

'For entertainment, we sometimes poke a hole in the lake ice, and light a match to the methane that streams out of the ice. My colleague Ed Ricter singed his beard and eyelashes.' Katey Walter
