A global issue

Until now, scientists didn't know how big this problem might be because no-one had measured how much methane was escaping before. But Katey's research shows we might have underestimated the amount of gas coming from northern wetlands by 63%.

'Our results suggest that methane emissions from Siberian lakes are important at the global scale. But it's not just the lakes in Siberia which are belching methane, there are likely to be others all over the world. The only thing that's needed is a source of food for the bacteria.' Katey Walter, climate scientist, University of Alaska Fairbanks
