Our place in space

From the earliest times, people have puzzled over the mystery of the night sky and our place in the universe.

For a long time it seemed natural to assume that our planet was at the centre of things. But in 1514 astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus argued that the Earth and other planets orbited the Sun. People didn't believe him, but the idea wouldn't die.
