The space race
As telescope technology improved, some space puzzles were solved. More planets were discovered and the Earth's place in the Solar System was settled once and for all.
When space rockets were developed in the mid-twentieth century, the space race really got started. The Soviet Union and the USA competed with each other to put the first human in orbit and on the Moon. The Soviets won the race to get a man in orbit, but the Americans came out on top for lunar landings.
