After Apollo

The Moon landings of the 1960s and 1970s were big news. But unmanned missions were also making spectacular discoveries.

Pioneer 10 was launched in 1972 and gave us our first close-up look at Jupiter. It passed beyond the orbit of Pluto in 1983 and should reach a star in the constellation Taurus in about 2 million years' time.

Voyager 1 and 2 flew by the outer planets of our Solar System in the 1980s, laying the groundwork for current missions. One of the cameras on the Cassini mission to Saturn is a souped-up spare from Voyager!
