Hot hunch

Investigators have a hunch that our Solar System was formed about 4.6 billion years ago from a giant cloud of swirling dust and gas called a nebula.

They suspect that gravity caused the nebula to collapse in on itself, condensing the cloud into lumps of rock, metal and ice. These eventually clumped together to become the planets, moons, asteroids and other bits and pieces that we see today.
