Smart move

Men have walked on the Moon, but we still know very little about our only natural satellite.

Was it formed at the same time and from the same stuff as our planet? Was it an asteroid captured by Earth's gravity? Or, as today's most fashionable theory suggests, did an asteroid the size of Mars smash into the Earth, blasting material off into space that congealed to form the Moon?

Scientists are aiming to solve the puzzle of the Moon's origin by sending a mission called
SMART-1 to investigate.
