Box of tricks
SMART-1 is a compact clever-clogs: just 1 cubic metre in size but packed with instruments. One of the instruments will help scientists get clued in about the Moon's surface minerals.
But didn't the Apollo astronauts bring back samples from the Moon's surface? They did - but they only looked at a small area. That's a bit like studying your local park and assuming that the entire Earth's the same. SMART-1 will be able to investigate the whole Moon.
