The latest stem-cell research suggests that adult stem cells repair liver damage by fusing with existing liver cells - not by becoming liver cells themselves, as scientists had thought.

Two scientific teams working on liver damage in mice, using adult stem cells, have come up with very similar findings, and have both published their results in the journal Nature this month. It all adds fuel to the ongoing debate over how adult stem cells can be used to treat disease.
