Surprising findings
Two years ago, scientists showed that it's possible to cure a liver disease with a bone marrow transplant. They gave a mouse with liver disease a transplant of adult stem cells from a healthy mouse's bone marrow. They thought that the stem cells turned into healthy liver cells.
But now Markus Grompe and his team have found that these 'new' liver cells actually contain a mix of genes from the donor and the patient. It seems that the transplanted cells actually fuse with the patient's own cells.
