Embryonic stem cells

The type of stem cell most often discussed in the news is an embryonic stem cell. Once an egg cell is fertilised, it begins to divide into more and more cells.

Researchers have collected these cells about four days after fertilisation, cultured them in the laboratory, and discovered that they can be made to develop into many types of specialised cells in the body.
