German engineers have invented an innovative sail system that could pull the dirty shipping industry towards a cleaner, greener future. The 'SkySail' tows ships along using wind power, its canopy soaring hundreds of metres above the waves.

The system looks like a giant kite, but the comparison ends there: 'There are a lot of differences between our SkySails and a normal kite. The big secret of how we developed it is to do with the shape and design, which makes it very aerodynamic.' Johannes Boehm, SkySails engineer
