What's the problem?
Cargo ships are important for transporting goods across the world. At the moment, 95% of the UK's imports and exports are transported by sea: 586 million tonnes of goods in 2005 alone.
These power-hungry cargo ships burn up millions of tonnes of fuel each year. The toxic cocktail of gases that they pump out is the world's third largest source of climate-affecting pollution after industry and road traffic.
