Far from shipshape

Ships mainly run on diesel and some even use unrefined crude oil. Most cars run on relatively clean petrol, but the fuels used by ships are much more polluting.

Cars and ships both produce the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, but ship fuel produces lots of sulphur dioxide too, which is a major cause of acid rain. Experts say shipping is one of the main sources of these harmful gases, but will ship owners clean up their act? They may not have a choice.
