All aboard

After successful tests with model boats, the next step was to try the technology with real ships. So the team kitted out MS Beaufort, a 55-metre-long cutter normally used to look after buoys and lighthouses. They fitted the vessel with a 160-metre-square SkySail and hit the high seas.

The kite system proved its worth, giving engineer's the green light for scaling the system up for large cargo tankers.
