The risks

Before carrying out fetal surgery, doctors must weigh up the risks to mother and baby.

'The heart valve operation of course has some risks and we would quote our mothers about a 5% risk of miscarrying. The babies are usually fairly healthy and if we were worried that the baby might die because of the procedure, we would stop immediately.'
Dr Helena Gardiner, Imperial College London
