More extensive surgery involves cutting open the mother's abdomen, exposing the unborn child.

Open fetal surgery carries higher risks to the mother and the baby. There's a greater chance of triggering premature birth. And the mother has to undergo two Caesarean sections - one for the operation, and another for the actual delivery.
