Whatever works

Low-tech warnings work too. Blowing whistles can raise the alarm in areas where people do not have access to TV, radio, phones or the Internet.

'People can be educated to recognise the first sign of a tsunami, such as the sea withdrawing suddenly, and to run to high ground if they see this. In many coastal areas around the Pacific, people are also taught to run to high ground when they feel a strong earthquake.'
