Earthquake expert John McCloskey at the University of Ulster foresaw that another earthquake was on the cards: 'Our results indicate unambiguously that there is a real danger of another earthquake in the region.'

December's quake increased the stress on the Indonesian fault in the Earth's crust, making another big earthquake more likely. But crucially, nobody could pinpoint when the next quake would hit.
