Speedy earthquake spotting
Instruments to measure earthquake tremors - seismometers - are located on land. They are uniquely kitted out with GPS (global positioning system) receivers that link to satellites, which means they can detect tiny changes in land movement.
A newly developed piece of software uses the seismometer recordings to quickly work out the exact location and strength of the earthquake. It creates a clear picture of the earthquake in a record-breaking time of 2-3 minutes.
