Getting the message out

'One extremely important thing to do is prepare and train local communities to react quickly to warning messages. So a central part of our project is to plan evacuation routes, run tsunami education programmes, and look at better town planning,' says Jorn Lauterjung, the project coordinator.

People at risk must also know where they should escape to when a tsunami is coming. 'Safe zones' will be displayed based on maps and escape plans. And evacuation drills will help to remind people of what they should do in the event of a tsunami warning.
