The planet hunters
But transits still play a part in cutting-edge science - observing transits around other stars is one way of finding Earth-like planets outside our solar system.
'If a planet crosses a star, the star's brightness will drop slightly and we can detect this. But we need the right line up, and not all stars have planets. To stand some chance of spotting a planet with this method you would need to observe 10,000 stars for a month.'
