Simply the best

Once the scientists had successfully created a waterproof variety of swarna, they wanted to produce a crop that would carry this ability from generation to generation. To do this they carefully searched through the DNA of each successive generation, picking out the best plants to breed from:

'Some siblings carry the unfavourable characteristics of tolerant rice plants as well as the target gene. If we know the precise DNA sequence of the gene, it is easy to identify the most preferable siblings.' Takuji Sasaki, National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences, Japan
