The GM debate

Over the past two decades scientists have created many kinds of genetically modified rice.

By inserting genes that help other plants fight off disease scientists have succeeded in making insect-proof rice. They've also used the genetic instructions for making vitamin A to grow rice that forms carrot-coloured grains packed with the essential nutrient. So while GM food remains unpopular in the UK, crop experts hope this 'golden rice' will help prevent blindness caused by vitamin A deficiency in areas of the world where there isn't a cheap, natural source.
