Hostile waters
Gemini can dive to 50 metres, under a maximum pressure of 125 tonnes, and operate in sea temperatures down to a chilly 4 degrees Celsius. But it can also bob along just under the surface of the water, sucking in air from outside through its own snorkel.
'A modern submersible is more complicated than a small aircraft, and is operated in a much more hostile environment. It also has to carry all necessary life support, as well as resisting huge forces.'
