Subs vs. diving

Marine biologists observe marine plants and animals by snorkelling and diving. But diving can be cold and dangerous.

'We did a test to compare the efficiency of a submersible to a diver. Divers are more flexible but can only dive for 45 minutes. The deeper you go, the less time they've got and they get cold quickly - even in shallow water. At 50 metres divers have hardly any "bottom-time" at all and it's usually not practical to dive less than 30 metres. In a submersible you can go deeper for longer."
Jenny Beaumont, marine biologist
