Copy of a scene from Trajan’s column showing Roman soldiers receiving first aid
This is a copy of a small section of the immense Trajan’s column, which was erected in Rome, Italy, in 106-114 CE. In this scene, wounded soldiers are undergoing surgery – probably with only alcohol or herbal remedies for pain relief. The original 38 metre-tall column celebrates Emperor Trajan’s (c. 53-117 CE) victory over the Dacians in 106 CE and still stands today. The Dacians were located in modern day Hungary and Romania and Dacia came under Roman control in 106 CE.
