3-D model of a skull of a female patient with the genetic disease Treacher Collins syndrome, London, England, 1999

The model on the right shows a female skull with Treacher Collins’ syndrome. The genetically inherited disease means the lower jaw and cheek bones are underdeveloped, causing other problems with the bones of the face. The model is highly detailed and was possibly made by using laser print technology. It is shown here with a model of a skull showing treatment for the disease (2001-211).

Glossary: skull

The skeleton of the head of a vertebrate animal, including the brain case, or cranium, and the bones and cartilages of the face and mouth. The skull can be subdivided into two parts: the cranium and the mandible. The human skull is made up from 22 bones.
