Pilgrim's souvenir cake decorated with a sun and cypress trees, Palestine, 1875-1930
Decorated with a sun and cypress trees, this souvenir in the shape of a slice of cake was brought back from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, then formally part of Palestine. Jerusalem is a holy city for Christians, Jews and Muslims. Pilgrimages are journeys to holy places or shrines. The cake may have been bought because of perceived medicinal and health-giving qualities as well as providing a souvenir of the pilgrimage. It is shown here with three similar examples (A156293, A156295 and A156296).
