Gold bracelet with amethyst and pearls, England, awarded for nursing in India, 1857-1860
The back of this amethyst and pearl bracelet has the following inscription: “Presented to Levinia Martin by the wounded Soldiers, for her attendance on them in the Hospital at Lucknow, during a Siege of five months, 1857.” The siege of Lucknow was a key episode in the Indian Mutiny, the ultimately unsuccessful uprising against British rule which occurred during 1857-1858.
