Hip bath, Europe, 1801-1900
A hip bath is a portable bath tub in which the bather sits with his or her legs hanging over the side. Only the hips and buttocks are immersed in the water, allowing the user to wash while sitting up. Measuring just under a metre high and wide, the tin-plated steel bath was easily portable so patients all around the hospital could be kept clean.
