First Aid kit used by pilots in the First World War, Germany, 1910-1914
Produced for the German air force, the kit would have been carried by airmen for the treatment of burns and other injuries during the First World War, The canvas pannier was easy to carry and contains several different types of dressings plus instructions for their use. The kit was made by Fredrich Gunter & Co, based in Hamburg. Of the many warring nations engaged in the conflict, the German air force was the only one to offer parachutes to its aircrews.

Glossary: burns
tissue damage caused by such agents as heat, cold, chemicals, electricity, ultraviolet light, or nuclear radiation. A first-degree burn affects only the outer layer (epidermis) of the skin. In a second-degree burn both the epidermis and the underlying dermis are damaged. A third-degree burn involves damage or destruction of the skin to its full depth and damage to the tissues beneath. Burns cause swelling and blistering, due to loss of plasma from damaged blood vessels.
