Case containing homeopathic medicines, England, 1870-1930
Inscribed with the name “Dr Malan’s Family Medicine Chest”, this leather box contains thirty labelled glass tubes filled with homeopathic medicines. Homeopathy was founded by Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1833) and was brought to England in the 1830s. Homeopathy is based on the idea that like cures like; for instance, something that cures vomiting will, if given in a large enough dose, cause vomiting. The doses used in homeopathy are very small.
